Chuyện xảy ra vào thời Nhà Minh, trung thần Viên Sùng Hoán bị gian thần hãm hại chỉ còn lại người con trai duy nhất Viên Thừa Chí may mắn được Kim Xà Lang Quân - Hạ Tuyết Nghi cứu thoát đưa lên núi Hoa Sơn học võ công. Mang trong mình nỗi oan khuất của người cha đã mất, Viên Thừa Chí lớn lên dưới sự bao bọc của chưởng môn phái Hoa Sơn.
Tình cờ, Viên Thừa Chí có được cây Kim xà kiếm cùng bí quyết võ công thượng thừa và trở thành kẻ thù của phái Thạch Lương - Ôn Gia Bảo, một thế lực lớn trên giang hồ. Từ đó, cuộc đời chàng đã thay đổi.
Những âm mưu đen tối của các thế lực và cuộc tình ngang trái vây quanh cuộc đời của Viên Thừa Chí như một định mệnh khắc nghiệt.
